About Field of View (FOV)
Field of View (FOV) determines how much of the game world you can see on your screen at one time. It's an angle, measured in degrees, that defines the extent of the observable environment. Different games define their FOV settings in different ways—most commonly as Horizontal, Vertical, or sometimes even Diagonal.
This can be confusing, as a setting of "90 FOV" in one game might feel completely different in another. This tool helps you standardize your settings by converting any FOV value to its horizontal, vertical, and diagonal equivalents for your specific screen aspect ratio, ensuring a consistent experience.
How to Use the Calculator
- Set Your Aspect Ratio: Enter your monitor's aspect ratio. Common values are 16:9 for widescreen or 4:3 for older monitors.
- Enter Your FOV Value: Input the FOV number from your game's settings.
- Select the FOV Type: Choose how your game measures FOV. Many modern PC games use Horizontal FOV based on a 16:9 screen, while others might use Vertical FOV. Check a source like PCGamingWiki if you're unsure.
- Read the Results: The calculator instantly provides the equivalent Horizontal, Vertical, and Diagonal FOV values for your settings.
Tips for Choosing Your FOV
- Higher FOV: A higher FOV (e.g., 100-110°) lets you see more of your surroundings, increasing peripheral vision. This is great for fast-paced games but can create a "fisheye" effect and make distant targets smaller.
- Lower FOV: A lower FOV (e.g., 80-90°) makes objects in the center of the screen appear larger and closer, which can help with aiming. However, it reduces your awareness of what's happening at the edges of your screen.
- Finding a Balance: Most players find a sweet spot between 90 and 105 horizontal FOV. Experiment to find what feels most comfortable and gives you the best performance without causing motion sickness.
