About FOV in Arma 3
Unlike most first-person shooters that use a Horizontal Field of View (HFOV), Arma 3 uses a Vertical Field of View (VFOV). This can be confusing for players coming from other games, as setting the FOV to "90" in Arma 3 results in a much wider, more distorted view than "90" in a game like CS2. This is because the VFOV value is based on the height of your screen, not the width.
This calculator solves that problem. You can enter the Horizontal FOV you're comfortable with from other games, and it will do the necessary trigonometric calculations based on your monitor's aspect ratio to give you the precise Vertical FOV value to enter in Arma 3. This ensures that your view of the world is exactly as you intend, balancing situational awareness with the ability to spot targets at a distance.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Your Aspect Ratio: Input your monitor's aspect ratio. For most modern monitors, this will be 16:9.
- Set Your Desired Horizontal FOV: Use the slider or text box to input the HFOV you are used to from other games (e.g., 90, 103).
- Get Your Vertical FOV: The tool will instantly calculate the correct VFOV value.
- Apply In-Game: In Arma 3, go to Options -> Video -> General. Find the "FOV" slider and set it to the calculated Vertical FOV value. The game will show the horizontal equivalent next to it, which should match your desired input.
Tips for Optimal Viewing
- Finding a Balance: In a military simulator like Arma 3, FOV is a trade-off. A wider FOV increases peripheral vision, which is great for situational awareness, but makes distant targets much smaller and harder to identify.
- A Good Starting Point: Many players find a horizontal FOV between 85° and 95° to be a good balance for infantry combat. This provides enough awareness without making enemies at 300 meters disappear into single pixels.
- Zoom is Independent: Remember that your FOV setting is for your base view. Aiming down sights or using optics will use their own zoom levels, so don't set your main FOV too low thinking it will help with sniping.
